43rd American Harp Society National Conference - June 27-30, 2018

The 43rd American Harp Society National Conference will be held June 27-30, 2018 at the University of Redlands, Redlands, California. Our chapter is proud to be sending a number of featured performers.

Dominique Piana is giving a presentation/performance on the harp music and contributions of Alfred Kastner and Kajetan Attl to the harp world.

Our own Silicon Valley Youth Harp Ensemble, directed by Sonya Yu, will perform a 45-minute set, including four arrangements by Kajetan Attl (The Swan, Moonlight Sonata, Liebestraum and the Blue Danube Waltz.) They will also perform Two Guitars (Wood, arr. Yu), Beauty and the Beast (Menken, arr. Yu), Take Five (Brubeck, arr McLaughlin) and Harp Symphony (Lee).

Paul Hurst is giving an hour-long tribute to DeWayne Fulton, titled "The Atomic Harpist".

The San Jose Youth Symphony Harp Ensemble, directed by Kristal Barlaan, will perform pre-concert music before the Concerto Competition on Friday, June 28. The theme of their program is "inspiring students to become musicians; blending the classical with contemporary to empower students with their legacy."

We urge all harpists to attend the inspiring national conference, which is rarely held in California. A full schedule of events and registration information is available at this link.

For any harpists interested in entering the 23rd National Competition of the American Harp Society in the summer of 2019, the require repertoire has been released at this link.

Harp Live

Harp Live! Sessions

What is “Harp Live!”?

“Harp Live!” or “performance practice” are quarterly gatherings where chapter members are invited to bring their favorite pieces to share or play for the group. Sessions include solos, harp duets, and/or chamber ensemble pieces. All are welcome to bring music they are working on, or just come to listen and enjoy the company of other harpists. Remember, you do not have to perform; you can participate by coming to hear others play. You will always hear or learn something new. Most participants give a history of the piece or the composer, how they found the piece, or why they enjoy playing it. And, if you do play, it does not have to be a polished performance! Wonderful refreshments are served and harps are provided. It is a great time to rekindle your harp spirit.

Our next Harp Live gatherings will be:
